Ok - A friend said the tardis does not really travel through time but has infinite doorways which open into time. I doubt this because on every episode we see the tardis spinning through space, why would they bother to show that? Any ideas?

I always thought it did travel through time, which is why they show the Tardis (apparently) "traveling" through time, possibly through a wormhole.
Also, there are times when the Doctor and his companion are moving and bouncing around inside the Tardis, which they (probably) wouldn't do if they weren't doing any traveling.
